Cardiac Output Monitoring Study (COMS)
Lead Trainee - Claire Allen.
The Cardiac Output Monitoring Study (COMS) is being run by the Research and Audit Federation of Trainees (RAFT), which is a new trainee research and audit collaborative which networks the different regional groups. The study will be coordinated by NWRAG in the North West.
A range of Cardiac Output Monitors (COMs) exist, but it is unclear which are commonly used in UK anaesthetic practice and what effect publication of NICE guidance and the national pre-requisite CQUIN scheme has had on their uptake and implementation. The aim of this study is to determine current COM availability and determine the effect of CQUIN payment schemes and NICE guidance in driving COM implementation.
Data collection will be in the form of a survey and will involve finding out which COMs are used in your trust, reviewing any local protocols about COM use and obtaining information about COM use in your trust through discussion with the relevant departmental lead or manager.
Data collection will occur during the 'hot week' of 30th June to 5th July 2014. If you wish to be a local trust representative you would need to be available during this week for data collection.
This survey will for the first time describe the number, type and availability of COMs in UK anaesthetic practice and attempt to assess the impact of national guidelines and CQUINs on their use and HES outcomes. Following the study RAFT plan to disseminate results through regional and local trust presentations, submit abstracts to national anaesthetic meetings (Anaesthetic Research Society) and prepare and submit a manuscript for publication in a relevant peer-reviewed journal. All presentations and publications made in name of RAFT. All contributors to project will be recognised and cited in any peer-reviewed publications.
