NWRAG Projects
Management of Perioperative Diabetes
This was the first regional project run by NWRAG. The regional audit examined the care provided to patients with diabetes undergoing surgery across the region over a 2 week period. The published results are available here.
VeSOP (Ventilation Strategies in Adult Perioperative Practice)
Our 2016 regional audit project aimed to study what tidal volumes do we use in theatre, and whether our use of high tidal volumes was contributing to local post-operative morbidity?

Supported Regional Projects
Peri-operative Frailty Assessment
The peri-operative frailty assessment has now finished with excellent participation across the region. We will have more details soon.

CoPro-COVID
The COVID pandemic has resulted in severe hypoxic respiratory failure for some of those worst affected. Following the recent publication of "Guidance for prone positioning of the conscious COVID-19 patient" from the Intensive Care Society, NWRAG ran a regional audit of the practice across the Northwest.

National Projects
RAFT Projects
DALES (Drug Allergy Labels in the Elective Surgical Population)
The 2018 RAFT annual project, following on from the success of iHYPE, was a 3-day snapshot study exploring the prevalence and impact of patient-reported drug allergies. It comprised of both patient and anaesthetist surveys with targeted same-day follow-up for patients with Beta-lactam and opioid allergy labels who are receiving these drugs. The ultimate aim was to help anaesthetists tackle the risks of false non-IgE ‘allergy’ labels which are now well established.
The results are expected soon.
iHype (Intraoperative Hypotension in the Elderly)
The 2nd national RAFT project was conducted in 2015 as an observational research study assessing the incidence of hypotension in elderly patients having surgery,
COMS (Cardiac Output Monitoring Study)
The COMS study was the first national study run by the RAFT group back in 2014. The aim of this study was to determine current COM availability and determine the effect of CQUIN payment schemes and NICE guidance in driving COM implementation.

Other National Projects
SNAP-2:EpiCCS
The 2nd Sprint National Anaesthesia Project: Epidemiology of Critical Care provision after Surgery (SNAP-2:EpiCCS) was run in 2017. It was an NIHR portfolio project aiming to described the epidemiology of perioperative risk and outcome, as well as critical care referral and admission after inpatient surgery in the UK. The results have been recently published and more information is available here.
SNAP-1
The 1st Sprint National Anaesthesia Project (SNAP-1) was a research project involving a 2 day evaluation of patient related outcomes after anaesthesia, in particular patient satisfaction and awareness. More information, including a link to the results, is available here.

PEACHY
PEACHY is the upcoming project from PATRN (Paediatric Anaesthesia Trainee Research Network). It is aiming to look at the impact of obesity on the perioperative care of paediatric patients, including of any increased risk.
The project has now launched, with an anticipated start date of September 2019. Check out more at their website here.
