Frailty is thought to be a better predictor of outcome than age alone. Perioperatively, frailty impacts on morbidity, mortality and length of stay across all surgical specialties. There is an increase in mortality at 30 days, 90 days and 1 year post operatively. Over 50% of patients over the age of 85 are frail. This poses a significant challenge for our surgical population.
Awareness around frailty and the implications for our patients is increasing. Projects and interventions have been running in other parts of the UK for a few years. We are setting up a NWRAG project looking at frailty, its assessment and how this group of patients is managed perioperatively around the Northwest.
The survey is now closed and we will present more details soon.
